Finally Photos

May 3, 2024

Take a picture, it will last longer. I’ve just about completed the addition of one final room for the upcoming Sleuthhounds: Cruise game. Actually, it’s a part of the ship that I’ve long intended to be there and that’s a photo gallery.

Modren cruise ships have long had official photographers taking official photos that you can officially purchase. Aboard the Gigantic Joanna cruise ship in the game, several locations come equipped with automated cameras, so that passengers can have their picture taken. These later show up in the ship’s photo gallery.

Yes, a photo gallery is totally anachronistic for the late 1800s, especially one where the photos look like polaroids. But then, so too are automated cameras and even a cruise ship of the nature of the Gigantic Joanna. That’s all right. The ship is intended to be a modern wonder marvel and besides, it takes place in a comedic, cartoon world where the rules of time and space can be twisted in convoluted ways. Yep.

During the game, players control Homes and Ampson. They can choose to use the cameras spaced around the ship in any of the game’s different acts. In the following act, the pictures show up in the photo gallery, where players can go to collect them. It’s a fun bit of nonsense that doesn’t really have anything to do with the rest of the game. It’s a rather emblematic cruise activity, the likes of which I’ve slipped in elsewhere in the game as well.

I have a few last pictures I still need to draw for the photo gallery. Once that’s done, there’s a bit of coding needed to integrate them into the game, which will also entail finishing the final lines of dialog (hint: they’re all related to taking pictures). Then the dialog writing will be complete and the recording will be able to commence. At least, once I’ve created a new space suitable for recording dialog.
